A delegação de São José dos Campos terminou na nona colocação geral da fase final dos Jogos da Melhor Idade (JOMI), em sua 25ª edição, disputados entre os dias 5 e 9 de setembro em São José do Rio Preto. A competição reuniu 183 municípios do estado de São Paulo.
Após cinco dias de disputas, São José somou 31 pontos no total e conquistou sete medalhas, sendo duas de ouro (natação), três de prata (atletismo, damas feminino e voleibol masculino categoria B) e duas de bronze (natação). O título ficou com Sorocaba, com 97 pontos.
As medalhas de ouro na natação foram conquistas pela atleta Rosângela da Exaltação nas provas nado livre e costas.
Atual campeão regional, São José levou uma delegação com 48 atletas no total (24 mulheres e 24 homens) e das 14 modalidades em disputa na competição, contou com representantes em sete: atletismo (masculino e feminino), damas (masculino e feminino), natação (masculino e feminino), tênis dupla (feminino), voleibol (categoria B 70+ masculino e feminino), malha (masculino) e xadrez (masculino).
As equipes competem com toda a estrutura de apoio da Prefeitura, por meio da Secretaria de Esporte e Qualidade de Vida.
Os Jogos da Melhor Idade são promovidos pela Secretaria de Esportes do Estado de São Paulo, com objetivo de valorizar e estimular a prática esportiva como fator de promoção de saúde e bem estar da população idosa.
